1998

How did you first hear about the HSTA?
From a friend. I was inactive for my first 2 years of membership. Then I started riding with VFR riders from Ohio (Mike Solace and others) and they talked about how great the HSTA was. I decided to find out what I was paying membership dues for, and discovered it was a great bunch of riders. The Michigan HSTA, however, is a notch above the crew in Ohio...in keeping with our "affectionate" rivalry.

First Bike:
A borrowed '72 Honda CL 350 during my first licensed summer. One time at a red light, a guy in a pickup truck yelled, "Hey, get a real bike!" – I thought, at least I'm ON a bike. At the end of that summer I purchased my first bike, a 600cc inline four, Yamaha Seca II. It was a great starter bike.

Favorite Bike:
The Honda VFR. It's perfect.

Who (or what) was your biggest influence in motorcycling?
My friend, Carolyn, led me to learn to ride after hearing about all the fun she was having as a new rider. My late dad, Ro, influenced me to always put safety first. And, the late and famous Dot Robinson (she had a lipstick holder fabricated to her handlebar) let me know I could be a skilled rider and still remain feminine. It must've worked, because on the South America trip, the guys nicknamed me "Penelope Pitstop" (from the Wacky Racers cartoon) because according to them, I "...always looked fresh and my hair always coiffed." Personally, I think they had three too many cervesas!

Favorite place to ride:
Geez, could you ask me an easier question like what is the meaning of life? I love to see new places with good people, while staying off of the straight and flat. Variety is key.

Most memorable motorcycle adventure:
The South America trip is unmatched. A close second was a trip to Nova Scotia in 2002 with eight friends from 3 states and two countries. As we headed east along Lake Ontario, we hopped from island to island via ferry. The Cabot Trail on Cape Breton was gorgeous. But then again, camping at Mid Ohio during Superbike race weekend is it's own unique adventure - like the time someone lit an old camper on fire, drove it through the campground, and then bailed, letting it careen unpiloted to a fiery death - now that's entertainment.

Best motorcycle advice or tip learned over the years:
LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO!

What turns you on the most about motorcycling or why do you like to ride?
Having a lot of finely tuned horsepower at my fingertips and striving to keep everything smooth - for me it's like a supercharged ballet.

What do you get out of the HSTA?
Camaraderie, friendship, laughs, learning and travel with other like-minded riders.

Hobbies and interests outside of motorcycling?
Adventure travel, friends, helping others, Christian involvement as Decon and Elder, learning, and providing top services within national level promotional graphic design to each of my clients.
